Concepción Diaz Cruz de Alicea

Narrative

The only detail we know about Concepcion’s life is that she is described in the 1920 Census as, ‘Cocinera Concepcion Diaz Cruz de Alicea, 81, viuda, no lee ni escribe, nacio en el mar, padre español, madre venezolana’. Limited information is included about Concepcion, and her race is not listed, however something significant is that the enumerator listed her being born on sea. It’s also worth noting that another criada lived with her, Maria Quiñones who was only 7 by the time of the 1920 Census. Moreover, it’s important to note that Concepcion worked as a cocinera for Enrique Cabezas Rodriguez who not only is a white Insular police officer, meaning that any violence Concepcion experienced most likely went unreported, but who had police reports filed against him. On July 14, 1921, he was arrested for physically assaulting the School Inspector Rafael Cordero and on June 25, 1922 he was arrested for attempting to murder his wife with jealousy reported as the motive since she for filed for divorce as he followed her down Ignacio Arsuaga Street, took out his revolver and shot her in the right ear and again in her right hand. This is just a glimpse of the violence Concepcion experienced. (Please see María Quiñones for more details).
