Angela Febres Llanos

Narrative

The 1910 case of 25 year old Black woman Ángel Febres Llanos is interesting because not only is she identified as the criada of Herminia de Jesus de Cordero (a 40 year-old widowed owner of an inn and innkeeper- no race listed), but she is also laboring as a cook in Herminia’s inn. Within the census data included of Ángel is the fact that she did not read or write nor was she in school. This causes me to speculate how having her work in both capacities kept her from receiving a proper education. Although she only entered the archive as a 25 year-old it would interesting to think about how she might have labored an an underaged girl in Herminia’s inn and home. This is, perhaps, what caused these gaps in her education. Herminia certainly had no issued employing children. Another criada labors in the home and inn with Ángel, 15 year-old Dolores Morales (no race listed). She also does not read or write nor go to school.
