Fermina Pérez Gerena

Narrative

Fermina Pérez Gerena is the 15 year-old sirvienta of José Fidalgo García. In 1920, Fermina labors in a home lived in by José (38 year-old pulpería store merchant) his 33 year-old wife Josefina Díaz Cruz, their 4 children (José Manuel, 10, reads and writes, speaks English, in school, Manuel Heriberto, 8, in school, Juan Angel, 6 in school, María Socorro, 3), and Josefina’s 23 year-old sister Carmen Díaz Cruz. Fermina, besides being describes in the documentation as 15 years-old servant, is describes as single woman (despite being a teenage girl) who does not read or write nor go to school. There is no information on her race, but white or blanco is used when describing the non-black members of that household. In a supposedly raceless society, this silence may imply that she is non-white.
